Caldor ends up accepting, having little choice, but he doesn’t believe he will succeed. What Cal assumes will be his death turns out very differently, however, when he actually meets the dragon—a surprisingly human-looking and handsome creature called Idriseth—and very quickly becomes enamoured with him. Cal may have come to steal the dragon’s book, but now he wants to steal his heart. But will the always guarded Idriseth let him? Can a dragon even love a human?

Cal is still bitter and angry after what happened to his guildmates, but he tries to put it all aside, move on, and focus on the new life path that's in front of him. That is until he runs into an old friend he thought was dead.
While Cal is ecstatic that Kyra is alive, her dislike of dragons quickly makes things complicated. But even as Caldor struggles to figure out how to explain everything to Kyra while avoiding upsetting both her and Idri, something much worse is brewing on the horizon. Lord Augerill needs Idriseth for his own, mysterious purposes. And his people won’t rest until the dragon is captured.

Idriseth is a dragon who loves reading and his eyes are different colors—two things that ensured he would be an outcast from dragon society,and that he would never have a mate.
With his clan long gone, however, Idriseth decides that perhaps he doesn't have to be lonely forever and that he can use magic to hide his dragon nature and find a human mate instead.
But becoming indistinguishable from a human is so far a work in progress.
Caldor Hawthorne

Growing up as an orphan, Caldor became a thief very early in life. With his fellow thieves' guild members, he works hard to make the rich slightly less rich, much to the irritation of the local lord.
Cal tends to be happy-go-lucky and never serious, spending his free time hanging out with his friends. Though seeing them be happy together does always make him long for a relationship of his own.
Lord Rivian Augerill

Human (though some would say monster instead)
Rivian is the Lord of Redreach and its surrounding area. However, his mother had much bigger aspirations for their family line, and he is very determined to make those aspirations reality.
He just needs a dragon's magic spell book first.
